Transcarpathian Oblast (Ukrainian: Закарпатська область, Rusyn: Закарпатьска область, Hungarian: Kárpátontúli tereyl, commonly known as Kárpátalja), also called Transcarpathian Ukraine, is the westernmost region of Ukraine, more or less the same as the former Subcarpathian Russia. The inhabitants are mainly Ukrainians and Ruthenians who speak Ruthenian; however, they are considered Ukrainians by the Ukrainian administration. Hungarians are a significant minority, making up about an eighth of the population and concentrated in the southwest near the border with Hungary. The capital is Uzhhorod, the secondary center is Mukachevo. The region is quite attractive for tourists, especially for lovers of more adventurous mountain hikes. It is the only Ukrainian region (and one of the few administrative units in the world) that borders four different states.
