Dolomites
2023
The Dolomites (Italian Dolomiti, German Dolomiten, Ladin Dolomites) are one of the mountain massifs of the Italian Alps. It is located in the northern part of Italy, to the east of the Bolzano Basin. The mountain range does not have a uniform ridge, it consists of many smaller, often very different mountain groups. The area is characterized by typical dolomitic elements such as the table surface of some massifs, steep walls, tower-like peaks, jagged rock ridges and the almost bizarre shapes of some peaks. In the territory of the Dolomites, there are almost all types of mountain landscape - from mountain meadows, through diverse rock massifs, basins with lakes to the glacier on the northern slopes of the highest peak of Marmolada. The Dolomites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009.
Due to the considerably complicated relief, the horological classification is not uniform in some respects, as is the nomenclature. In addition, certain complications are caused by the bilingualism of part of the population. Although the names of individual mountain groups, massifs and peaks are established, articles occasionally appear in the media incorrectly combining Italian and German names.
